How Luton Got Its Name

The first settlement in the area was a small Roman town called Durocobrivis which later became Dunstable, at this time the area now known as Luton was just an area of scattered farms. Luton first came into being during the sixth century when a Saxon outpost was built on the banks of the Rever Lea, the settlement was known as "Lea tun". By the time the town was recorded in the Domesday Book it's name had evolved to "Loitone"

Some Facts About Luton

A motte and bailey type castle which gave its name to Castle Street was built in 1139 but demolished fifteen years later, the site is now home to the Matalan store.

The name "Vauxhall" relates to a mercenary soldier hired by King John to act on his behalf in the town. The soldier, called "Falkes de Breaute", married a local woman and moved into her house, that house became known as "Fawkes Hall" which evolved into the name "Vauxhall".

The Griffin in the Vauxhall Motors emblem also relates back to Falkes de Breaute. King John granted Faulkes the Manor of Luton in return for his services to the King, with this honour came the right to create a coat of arms for the Faulkes name, he chose the Griffin which then became associated with both Luton and Vauxhall.
